![]() To reiterate, success in Squad is based on good communication. Otherwise, most squads default to some kind of infantry configuration - but that can be a whole other article in itself. Vehicle squads with specific purposes are given priority for using their assigned assets it’s considered bad etiquette to steal your team’s tank if there’s already an existing tank squad. For instance, there might be a heli squad with a single helicopter pilot (or up to three if they have door gunners, though this is rare). Squads can also specialize in different roles. There are two other voice channels: local (where anyone on your team can hear you nearby) and squad radio (where only your squad can hear you regardless of their position). Every SL has access to command chat, a special voice channel that lets the team leadership coordinate their positions, call out targets, and relay other useful information.Īt the squad level, SLs can designate two fireteam leads (FTLs) who can spot and mark enemy positions on the map, build basic defenses within a FOB’s zone of control, and help the SL delegate tasks. Every squad is led by a Squad Leader and one of them is chosen to be the team Commander (SLs can nominate themselves and are selected by popular vote among each other). Players are divided up into squads with a maximum of nine players each. Unlike other multiplayer FPS games, Squad requires team-level cohesion and communication. ![]() The only difference between the two is AAS’s points are all visible at the start of the game whereas RAAS’s points are hidden, only revealing themselves one by one as you capture each point. Each team starts at one end of the map and captures points sequentially. Squad‘s most popular game modes such as Advance and Secure (AAS) and Random Advance and Secure (RAAS) are similar to Battlefield‘s Conquest. Still, Squad is unique in how it blends elements of both a large-scale FPS and real-time strategy where building FOBs and setting up frontlines are just as important as shooting the enemy and bleeding their tickets.īased on a popular Battlefield 2 mod called Project Reality, Squad has a lot of similarities to its predecessor: each team starts with a set amount of tickets, and the one who has the most remaining (either by bleeding the other of theirs or by time running out) wins. In addition to the games I named above, Squad finds itself in good company among other games like Red Orchestra, Rising Storm, Darkest Hour, and Hell Let Loose. Squad is one of the best games that does what it does, providing an immersive tactical realism experience that isn’t too overwhelming to new players but not so streamlined that milsim vets aren’t turned off to it. While this new player guide will be updated over time to remain relevant as Squad evolves, today it’ll be enough to answer the vast majority of new player questions - and maybe even give some of the veteran players some ideas to refresh their understanding of the game. But instead of whining incessantly about the influx of noobs stealing assets, ignoring objectives, and trying to lead squads without knowing how to read a map, I might as well pass down what I’ve learned over 500+ hours in Squad –not to mention the thousands of hours from other milsim and tactical realism games I’ve accrued over the years. It masquerades as an arcade shooter at first glance but its mechanics have a depth most don’t expect. In fairness to them, Squad is one of the more accessible tactical realism games compared to others like Escape From Tarkov, Arma, and Project Reality. On the other, it can be infuriating when people play it like Call of Duty or Battlefield, lone wolfing it without any regard for playing the objectives, supporting the team, or having a lick of tactical awareness beyond “shoot gun.” On one hand, it makes me happy to see so many new people try out one of my favorite games. ![]() ![]() For a seasoned Squad player like myself, free weekends like the one that just concluded are a rather blursed time.
